Fifteen years inside the studios of G-Star RAW and Suitsupply, and freelance for brands, agencies and photographers. He shoots, retouches, composites and manages colour, so the image that goes out is the one the brief asked for.
“Atarix” is a nod to early Atari and gaming days: add an X to Atari and his name is in between.
Career
Early days
Photoshop and computers from age 13: digitising my own sketches, then posters for the nightclub I tended bar at. By 20 it had become image editing, intricate manipulation and photography.
Freelance beginnings
From 20 to 22 a computer technician for IBM at Schiphol, retouching hair fashion and beauty on the side. Mark Melief of Kinki Kappers kept raising the bar, and showed me retouching could be a career.
G-Star RAW
Nearly six years, from junior to senior retoucher. From webshop retouching to leading retouch teams, main campaigns, lookbooks and marketing images for print and online, and advising on shoots in-house and for freelance clients.
Suitsupply
Brought in to overhaul the studio: server structure, hardware to industry standard, hiring and training the team, a DAM system, and advanced retouching and photography brought in-house. Trained external retouch houses to Suitsupply’s standard.
Freelance
Alongside those roles, freelance work for Grolsch, Tommy Hilfiger, Wilson and photographers. Full-time freelance since the end of 2021.
